Route 1: the retailer delivering the new one

If a new washer is arriving, ask about haul-away when you order rather than when the truck shows up on your street in Sylvan Park. Policies differ by retailer and by whether the old unit is disconnected, and delivery crews in this city are working tight routes, so an unplanned haul-away is often just declined.

Two conditions kill it regularly: the old unit is still hooked up, and the old unit is not on the same floor as the door. A basement washer in an older Belmont home is the standard refusal.

Route 2: scrappers

Put a working-looking appliance at the end of a driveway on Gallatin Pike, Nolensville Pike or Dickerson Pike and it may well disappear before the weekend. This is a real thing that happens in Nashville and it is free.

It is also unreliable and it only works if the appliance is already outside, which means you have already done the hard half. It does nothing for a chest freezer in a Donelson garage or a water heater in a Green Hills basement. And it does not work at all in a Gulch tower.

Route 3: the curb

Metro rules for large-appliance set-out depend on your service address and building type, and appliances with refrigerant are usually treated differently from other bulky items. Check your current Metro bulky-pickup page before anything goes to the street.

Assume two things regardless. First, the appliance still has to get from where it is to the curb, and a full-size fridge does not come up a basement stair by itself. Second, an appliance sitting on a Nashville sidewalk through a summer week is an eyesore, a hazard with a door on it, and in an HOA neighborhood a letter.

Route 4: haul it yourself

A fridge or freezer should travel upright and should be emptied and defrosted first, which sounds obvious until you do it in July and discover what a chest freezer that has been off for two days smells like. A tank water heater still holds water; drain it before it moves or you are carrying forty extra pounds down a Belmont-Hillsboro basement stair. And check the current gate rate and hours at your disposal site before driving, because appliances are often handled separately from general household waste.

Route 5: flat price, carried out

The price above covers the crew coming in, disconnecting nothing, and carrying it out from wherever it sits. No stair charge for a basement in Woodmont, no charge for a third-floor Nations tall-skinny, no fuel line, no disposal added afterwards.

Have the appliance disconnected before the crew arrives. We are not plumbers or electricians, and a gas range in particular needs a professional to shut off and cap the line before it goes anywhere.
