Disposal included, carried out from any floor, and the per-visit minimum is $75. The microwave alone is therefore a $75 visit; sent with anything else it is $30.
Refrigerant is handled, and it is never a surcharge
Anything with a sealed cooling system contains refrigerant: refrigerators, freezers, window and portable AC units, dehumidifiers, heat pumps. Federal law requires that refrigerant be recovered by certified technicians before the unit is scrapped, rather than vented.
That is part of what you are paying for and there is no separate line for it. A standard refrigerator is $164, full stop. There is no freon fee, no EPA fee, no environmental surcharge, and no disposal charge added afterwards. If you have been quoted one of those somewhere, it is worth asking what exactly it covers.
Same for the rest: a chest freezer is $146, an upright is $149, a window AC under 8k BTU is $87, an 8k-plus unit is $109, a portable AC is $85, and an outdoor AC condenser or heat pump unit is $115.
Retailer haul-away only works on delivery day
This is the single most common way people end up with an old appliance in the garage for eight months.
If a new washer is coming, arrange haul-away when you place the order, not when the truck pulls up on your street in Sylvan Park. Delivery crews run tight routes across the metro and an unscheduled haul-away is simply declined. It is also usually conditional: the old unit has to be disconnected already, and in many cases it has to be on the same floor as the door.
Two Nashville situations where it reliably fails. First, basement laundry in an older Green Hills, Belmont-Hillsboro or Woodmont house, because the crew is not carrying a washer up a 1940s basement stair. Second, a stacked unit in a second-floor closet of a tall-skinny in The Nations, because that is a two-person carry down two flights and it is not in their route time.

What you have to do before the crew arrives
The removal is flat-priced. The prep is not something we can do for you.
- Water lines off and disconnected. Washers, dishwashers, fridges with ice makers.
- Gas lines capped by a professional. A gas range at $137 does not move until the line is properly shut off and capped. This is not a DIY step.
- Hardwired units disconnected by an electrician. Common on electric ranges and some water heaters.
- Water heaters drained. A tank still holds water, and forty extra pounds coming up a basement stair is a real difference.
- Fridges and freezers emptied and defrosted. Start a day ahead. A chest freezer that has been off for two days in a Nashville July is a sensory experience nobody needs.

Knowing the local pattern helps you plan the visit, because it determines how long it takes.
- The garage second fridge. Near-universal in Donelson, Hermitage, Bellevue and Crieve Hall. Twenty years old, still running, $164.

The free routes, honestly
Scrappers. An appliance at the end of a driveway on Gallatin Pike, Dickerson Pike or Nolensville Pike often disappears within days. Free, unreliable, and it only helps if the unit is already outside, which means you did the hard part.
Curbside collection. Metro rules for large appliances depend on your service address and building type, and units with refrigerant are usually treated differently from other bulky items. Check your current Metro bulky-pickup page. Either way you still have to get it to the street.
Utility rebate programs. Recycling incentives for old working refrigerators and freezers come and go. Worth a search, and if one is running, it is genuinely the best deal available. They usually require the unit to be working and plugged in when they arrive.
A safety note that matters more than it sounds: take the door off or secure it on any fridge or freezer you leave outdoors for any length of time.
Booking it
Tell us the appliance, what floor it is on, and confirm it is disconnected. That is the whole conversation. A water heater in a Woodmont basement, a stacked unit on the second floor of a Nations duplex and a chest freezer in a flat Madison garage are all flat-priced and none of them carries a stair charge.
You get the number before the truck leaves. Refrigerant handling, the carry and the disposal are all inside it.
Frequently asked questions
Do you charge a freon or EPA fee on refrigerators?

Can the store that delivers my new washer take the old one?

Do I need a plumber or electrician first?
For gas lines, yes, always, and they must be capped properly. For hardwired units, yes. For a standard plug-in washer with the water shut off, no.
Will you carry a washer up from a basement?
Yes, and there is no stair charge. A washer and dryer out of a Belmont-Hillsboro basement is $133 + $128 = $261, the same as a pair in a garage.
What about the microwave and the small stuff?
A countertop microwave is $30. Because the per-visit minimum is $75, it is worth sending small items along with something larger rather than booking them alone.
