The seasonal pattern
What people pay in this city moves with the calendar in a way that is unusually pronounced.
Late July and the first week of August. Lease turnover across Midtown, Hillsboro Village, West End and 12 South, plus students arriving at Vanderbilt, Belmont, Lipscomb, TSU and Fisk. Lots of $103 mattresses and $126 sofas, booked with two days' notice.
March into June. House moves and pre-listing cleanouts, which is where the $431 and $587 bookings cluster. It is also severe weather season, and storm work is its own thing.
Deep summer. Garages and back yards. Hot tubs at $322, patio sets, and a lot of furniture that did not survive a few Middle Tennessee summers in an unconditioned space.
January. Treadmills at $115 in, and the old one at $115 out.
Where item pricing beats the truck, and where it does not
You always take the lower of the two, so it is worth knowing the crossover.
Four pieces of furniture usually price lower by item. Example: sofa $126 + coffee table $67 + end table $52 = $245, against a quarter truck at $241. That is close enough to go either way, and it is exactly the crossover point.
Six or more pieces almost always price higher by item than by truck. Example: sofa $126 + loveseat $119 + armchair $77 + coffee table $67 + end table $52 + bookshelf $72 = $513, which is identical to the five-eighths bracket, and a half truck at $431 is likely to hold all of it.
Anything with bags, boxes or loose material in it should go straight to a truck bracket.
What nobody pays extra for

How to work out your own
Write down what is actually going. Add the per-item prices. Compare the total to the nearest truck bracket. Book the lower one.
If the list has more than about six lines, or if any line is really a euphemism for a pile, skip the addition and pick a bracket. And whatever you do, count the garage, because in a city where most houses have no basement, the garage is always holding more than the person who filled it remembers.
