Why this move creates so much junk
The direction of travel is consistent: out of East Nashville, 12 South, Sylvan Park, Inglewood and Donelson, and into Franklin, Nolensville, Spring Hill and Thompson's Station in Williamson County, or Murfreesboro, Smyrna and La Vergne in Rutherford.
What people are moving from is old housing stock: 1920s bungalows and 1950s ranches with small, closed rooms. What they are moving into is new construction with open plans, a bonus room and a walk-in closet in every bedroom.
Almost nothing translates. The dining set that suited a separate dining room looks lost in an open great room. The sectional that filled a bungalow living room is now undersized. The bedroom furniture that was sized for a small room is the wrong scale. So people replace rather than move, and the old set has to go somewhere.
Do it before the movers, not after
The expensive mistake is paying to transport furniture to Nolensville and then deciding it does not work there.
Movers price by weight and by time. A dining table, six chairs and a hutch is real weight, and you pay to move it south down I-65 or I-24 and then pay again to get rid of it once it is in the new house. Decide in Nashville.
Walk the new floor plan with a tape measure before moving day. If a piece does not have a wall it fits on, it is not coming.
A worked example
A Donelson three-bedroom, family moving to Spring Hill, replacing the living and dining furniture.

$126 + $119 + $163 + $180 + $160 = $748. A full truck is $732, which is lower, so the full truck is the booking and there is room in it for whatever comes out of the garage as well.
The other direction happens too
Some of this traffic runs the other way. People sell a big house in Brentwood or Franklin and downsize into a condo in the Gulch, a unit in Germantown or a tall-skinny in The Nations.
That move produces more junk than the outbound one, not less, because a 3,500 square foot house with a bonus room and a three-car garage is emptying into somewhere with no garage at all. Those jobs are routinely a full truck at $732 plus a second visit, and they usually include a treadmill at $115, a home gym at $241, a pool table at $603 or a hot tub at $322.
What the new house does not have
Two specific things people forget when they plan the move.
Storage. New builds in Nolensville and Thompson's Station have closets but often no attic you can stand in and no basement. The boxes that lived in your Donelson garage have nowhere to go at the other end. Sort them now, not in November.
HOA rules. Most of the newer subdivisions out there run an HOA, and furniture staged at the curb while you sort is a letter. If you are arriving with things you intend to get rid of, book the removal for the week you arrive rather than leaving it in the driveway.
Timing it around the calendar
This kind of move clusters from March through June, tied to school calendars in Williamson and Rutherford County. That is also Middle Tennessee's severe weather season, so do not stage a pile outdoors and hope.
Furniture left in a Donelson or Hermitage driveway through an April storm line comes out heavier, and if the weather sits humid for a week afterwards, upholstery that was donatable on Monday is not by Friday.
Booking around a closing
Book the cleanout for a day you still have access to the old house, ideally a few days before the movers rather than after. Give us the item list or a truck bracket, the neighborhood, and whether things are inside or already staged in the garage.
Price is set before the truck leaves. No stair charge, no fuel line, disposal included, and no surcharge for a same-day booking when the closing date moves, which it will.
